There’s no shortage of things to see and do when you come and stay at the Taynuilt Hotel. The immediate area and surrounding Argyll is vibrant with an abundance of things to do. Whether you want to go sightseeing, hillwalking, fishing, visit castles, historical or archaeological sites, find out how whisky is made or take a boat trip to go whale watching and see dolphins, seals, sea eagles and puffins, Argyll won’t disappoint.

The picturesque town of Oban is just 12 miles from the Taynuilt Hotel. Known as the ‘Gateway to the Isles’ because of its ferry terminal connecting Oban with the Isle of Mull, South Uist, Islay, Colonsay, Coll, Lismore, Tiree, Barra and nearby Kerrera. Other notable places to visit in Oban include McCaig’s Tower resembling the Colosseum in Rome, Oban Distillery, the ruined Dunollie Castle with its museum, gardens and woodland and operators who offer wildlife boat trips in the Sound of Mull and Firth of Lorn Special Area of Conservation.

Hillwalking and Mountain Climbing
Taynuilt is a hillwalker’s paradise. Whether you want to ramble up and down smaller hills or bag a Munro or two there’s plenty of choice.

The nearest and one of Scotland’s most famous mountains is Ben Cruachan, the highest mountain in Argyll. This striking mountain is a great climb in itself but to get a better appreciation of this magnificent mountan and its stunning views of Loch Etive all the way to the Firth of Lorne you can try the ‘Cruachan Horseshoe’, a walk that encircles the Cruachan Dam and takes in two Munros (Ben Cruachan and Stob Daimh) as well as their subsidiary tops (Meall Cuanail, Stob Dearg (Taynuilt Peak), Drochaid Ghlas, Stob Garbh and Beinn a’Buiridh).

The ‘Dalmally Horseshoe’ (Ordnance Survey map 50, Glen Orchy) is a less demanding climb which consists of Stob Daimh and Beinn a’Bhuiridh as its main tops.

Within an hour’s drive are the Arrochar Alps and various peaks in and around Glen Orchy.

Ben Cruachan the ‘Hollow Mountain’ - Ben Cruachan is perhaps best known for its dam and power station. The mountain has been hollowed out to house a gigantic hydroelectric power station which provides electricity to the National Grid when demand is high. The station’s visitor centre on the shores of Loch Awe is very popular with both children and adults as it has an exhibition about the power station and renewable energy, cafe and gift shop. Guided tours take you from the visitor centre 1km deep inside the mountain where you can see the vast hollowed out cavern and hydroelectric turbines.

Loch Awe, only 5 miles from the Hotel, is renowned for its superb game and coarse fishing (permit required) especially record breaking brown and ferox trout and pike, the picturesque River Orchy offers superb salmon fishing (permit required) and a huge variety of sea fish can be fished for in Loch Etive, Loch Fyne and Loch Creran as well as from great shore marks around Oban such as Dunollie Point. Fishing boat charters operate from Oban and specialise in skate fishing.
